    Food & No Wine ~ Photoniks ~ Episode 18

In this episode of Photoniks, Mr. Daps and Clocky indulge in two of their favorite pastimes: vintage photography and eating. It’s a “food tour” through the decades, capturing the evolution of Disneyland’s dining landscape—from the era of all-day pancakes to frozen grape juice bars.

This episode also marks a special milestone, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the very first Food & Wine Festival at Disney California Adventure. While we don’t have vintage wine photos, we find some classic paper cups that come pretty close!

    In This Episode, We Discuss:

    • Breakfast at the River’s Edge (Late 50s): We analyze a beautiful black-and-white shot of “Ethel” enjoying coffee and breakfast right off the Rivers of America. We debate whether it’s Aunt Jemima’s Pancake House or a predecessor to River Belle Terrace, and we geek out over a giant map of the river visible in the background.
    • The Tomorrowland Yacht Club (Early 60s): A rare look at the wedge-shaped building that now houses Galactic Grill. We discuss the “nautical-meets-space” aesthetic, spot the original Moonliner rocket, and check the vintage menu—which surprisingly featured chili and beans alongside the classic burgers.
    • Welch’s Grape Juice & Fantasia (1970): A colorful winter snapshot of the Welch’s stand (now the site of Pinocchio’s Daring Journey). We discuss the Fantasia-themed interior murals and the legendary frozen grape juice bars that we think definitely need a comeback.
    • Character Dining at the Red Wagon Inn (Pre-1965): Before it was the Plaza Inn, it was the Red Wagon Inn. We spot a “Practical Pig” (from the Three Little Pigs) wandering past guests as they eat, and we marvel at how open and fence-free the Hub used to be.
    • Mid-Century New Orleans Square (1968): A sunny afternoon at what is now Tiana’s Palace. We notice the vintage ashtrays on the tables, the fire hydrants in plain sight, and the youthful, “young” look of the foliage on Tom Sawyer Island.

    “Picture-in-Picture” Highlights:

    • [03:36] The Classic Paper Cup: Identifying the vintage orange and blue striped Disneyland logo on a coffee cup that Clocky fears would rip at any moment.
    • [04:37] The Sunburst Table: Admiring the ornate, fan-back chairs and sunburst-patterned tables that preceded the design of DCA’s Sunshine Plaza.
    • [10:16] Skyway vs. Gondola: Noting the specific bucket style that helps date our Tomorrowland photo to the early 60s.
    • [14:54] The Bold Green Garbage Can: Spotting a bright green trash bin near the Welch’s stand that was impossible to miss.
    • [19:12] The “Squatty” Pig: Analyzing the evolution of character costume designs and how the performers used to see through the hats.

  • Handcrafted Disneyland ~ Photoniks ~ Episode 14

    Handcrafted Disneyland ~ Photoniks ~ Episode 14

The release of Disneyland Handcrafted on Disney+ has everyone talking about the immense artistry that went into the park’s creation over 70 years ago. In this episode, Mr. Daps and Clocky take that inspiration to the archives, looking at rare photos that highlight the meticulous, manual labor—the “handcrafting”—that defines the original magic of Disneyland.

From hand-carved woodwork on Main Street to the individual stones of Sleeping Beauty Castle, we’re zooming in on the small details that prove no job was too small for the early Imagineers.

    In This Episode, We Discuss:

    • The Mystery Bird of Main Street: We kick off with an obscure black-and-white close-up of a bird perched on a flower planter. We debate its exact location, narrowing it down to the corner near Market House and the old lockers.
    • The Art of the Entrance: A deep dive into the space between City Hall and the Firehouse. We discuss the ornate, likely hand-carved woodwork above the “fancy entrance to the restrooms” and how these details were crafted long before modern robotics.
    • Sleeping Beauty Castle Pre-1966: We analyze a shot of the castle before the family coat of arms was added. Clocky and Mr. Daps discuss the “tedious” work of painting individual bricks to create forced perspective and the risks workers took before modern scaffolding.
    • The Mark Twain & Frontierland Finery: Spotting vintage rental-style folding chairs on the deck and the delicate wrought iron fleur-de-lis patterns that once lined the dock.
    • A Different Breed of Carousel Horse: We identify “Avanti,” a King Arthur Carrousel horse, back when the herd was multicolored (black and gray) rather than the uniform white we see today.
    • Skull Rock & Casey Jr.: A nostalgic look at the kinetic energy of the old Fantasyland, including the hand-sculpted Skull Rock waterfalls and the painted details on Casey Jr.’s “face.”
    • Scaffolding & Scrims (or lack thereof): We close with a rare construction photo of the Pirate Ship (Captain Hook’s Galley) during a rebrand. We marvel at the fact that in the 60s and 70s, guests could see the work happening without the massive printed scrims used in 2026.

    “Picture-in-Picture” Highlights:

    • [03:14] The Obscure Bird: A test for the ultimate Disney fan—finding the bird on Main Street.
    • [07:16] Hand-Carved Details: Discussing the craftsmanship of the molding near City Hall.
    • [10:32] The “Stone” Work: How Imagineers used paint and texture to turn plaster into a medieval fortress.
    • [17:34] Avanti the Horse: Comparing the vintage black-and-gray paint scheme to the modern “Jingles-era” white.
    • [21:22] Skull Rock: A look at the natural-yet-fantastical sculpting that once stood where the Dumbo queue is now.
    • [27:31] Repainting the Galley: Seeing the Pirate Ship mid-rebrand without the “protective” walls of modern construction.
