In this episode of Photoniks, Mr. Daps and Clocky indulge in two of their favorite pastimes: vintage photography and eating. It’s a “food tour” through the decades, capturing the evolution of Disneyland’s dining landscape—from the era of all-day pancakes to frozen grape juice bars.
This episode also marks a special milestone, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the very first Food & Wine Festival at Disney California Adventure. While we don’t have vintage wine photos, we find some classic paper cups that come pretty close!
In This Episode, We Discuss:
- Breakfast at the River’s Edge (Late 50s): We analyze a beautiful black-and-white shot of “Ethel” enjoying coffee and breakfast right off the Rivers of America. We debate whether it’s Aunt Jemima’s Pancake House or a predecessor to River Belle Terrace, and we geek out over a giant map of the river visible in the background.
- The Tomorrowland Yacht Club (Early 60s): A rare look at the wedge-shaped building that now houses Galactic Grill. We discuss the “nautical-meets-space” aesthetic, spot the original Moonliner rocket, and check the vintage menu—which surprisingly featured chili and beans alongside the classic burgers.
- Welch’s Grape Juice & Fantasia (1970): A colorful winter snapshot of the Welch’s stand (now the site of Pinocchio’s Daring Journey). We discuss the Fantasia-themed interior murals and the legendary frozen grape juice bars that we think definitely need a comeback.
- Character Dining at the Red Wagon Inn (Pre-1965): Before it was the Plaza Inn, it was the Red Wagon Inn. We spot a “Practical Pig” (from the Three Little Pigs) wandering past guests as they eat, and we marvel at how open and fence-free the Hub used to be.
- Mid-Century New Orleans Square (1968): A sunny afternoon at what is now Tiana’s Palace. We notice the vintage ashtrays on the tables, the fire hydrants in plain sight, and the youthful, “young” look of the foliage on Tom Sawyer Island.
“Picture-in-Picture” Highlights:
- [03:36] The Classic Paper Cup: Identifying the vintage orange and blue striped Disneyland logo on a coffee cup that Clocky fears would rip at any moment.
- [04:37] The Sunburst Table: Admiring the ornate, fan-back chairs and sunburst-patterned tables that preceded the design of DCA’s Sunshine Plaza.
- [10:16] Skyway vs. Gondola: Noting the specific bucket style that helps date our Tomorrowland photo to the early 60s.
- [14:54] The Bold Green Garbage Can: Spotting a bright green trash bin near the Welch’s stand that was impossible to miss.
- [19:12] The “Squatty” Pig: Analyzing the evolution of character costume designs and how the performers used to see through the hats.
